How to Upgrade¶
Please refer to the installation instructions on how to upgrade Allsky.

- Ability to define how long images are kept on remote Allsky Websites
- Upload Keolapses to local and remote Websites and remote servers
- Display Keolapses in the WebUI and on Allsky Websites
- Improved mask editor
- Conditional formatting of fields in the overlay editor
- Ability to read the speed of a pwm fan
Breaking Changes¶
If upgrading from anything other than v2026.10.01 there are some breaking changes
Remapping variables in the Overlay Editor
In this release, some overlay variables have changed name. That means an older overlay may still contain fields that point to variable names that are no longer the preferred or current ones.
To help with that, the Overlay Editor now provides a remapping option in the field properties editor. The purpose of this is simple: instead of deleting a field and rebuilding it by hand, you can update the field so it points to the replacement variable.
From a user's point of view, this matters because the layout of the field may still be perfectly fine. The problem is not necessarily where the field is or how it looks. The problem is that the variable reference inside it may need to be brought up to date.
This is especially useful when:
- you have upgraded Allsky and an older overlay needs bringing into line with newer variable names,
- you want to keep the existing overlay design intact,
- you would rather correct fields one by one than rebuild the overlay from scratch.
The practical benefit is straightforward: you can update an older overlay more cleanly and with much less rework. The remapping option in the field properties editor is there to help you make that sort of maintenance change safely and deliberately.
The Sun Moon and Planets have moved to a module
This feature has been removed from the overlay manager and put into a dedicated module. Please install the Solar System Module and configure it. The Allsky upgrade will NOT migrate any settings you had.
Dew heater module is new and requires the Temp module
Historically several modules have all replicated the code to read sensors so adding a new sensor required updating the same code multiple times. Now the Temp module is the only module that can read a temperature sensor. When it does so it makes the data available to other modules via variables, AS_TEMP, AS_HUMIDITY etc In practice hit means if you want to run the dew heater module then you will need to
- Install the Temp and Dew heature modules.
- Configure the Temp module to read your sensor(s)
- Set the Dew Heater to use "Allsky" as the "Sensor Type"
- Configure the Dew Heater module
None of your older dew heater settings will be migrated
Running custom scripts on the System Page / Scripts Module
For security reasons scripts used in Buttons on the system page or run via the scripts module can only be run from the following directory
~/allsky/config/myFile
If you have any scripts run from the System Page or Scripts Module then you will need to move the scripts to the location above and change the config
Meteor Module has been replaced
The core Allsky meteor module has been replaced by a new "Temporal Meteor Detection" module.
Changelog¶
Image processing¶
Days to keep logic change
If Days to Keep is 10, then keep the last 10 days images, irregardless of when those 10 days are. The current method keeps the last 10 days' images.
Moon-dependent nighttime stretch
Allow for different auto stretch amounts depending upon the Moons brightness
Show the correct URL for the Startrails Settings helper tool.
Fix the "generateForDay.sh" script to use the correct URL to the Startrails Settings helper tool
Store the time of the first and last image
The startrails table in the database has two new columns, starttime and endtime which are the times the first and last images were taken. Those fields are displayed in the "Startrails info" page.
Modules and Overlays¶
Modules: Improve Mask editor
The prior mask editor was limited. This change implements a much improved mask editor with more advanced features. such as:
Overlays: Conditional styles for fields (colour, stroke, opacity, font by value)
This change allows you to control the attributes (Colour, font etc) of a field based upon its value. For example, if the CPU temperature is above 40 C it can display as red.
New pressure formats (hPa, inHg, mmHg)
Pressure variables can now be formatted in hPa, inHg, or mmHg.>
Add fan tachometer support
Allow the speed of a fan (i.e., RPM) to be read and used in overlays. This requires a PWM fan with four wires.
Prevent formatting issues crashing the overlays
A field whose value can't be formatted no longer causes the whole overlay to fail
Fix exporter module
Some values could cause the exporter to fail, this is no longer the case
Change way gpio chip is selected
Ensure the correct GPIO chip is selected even for rogue Kernels
Fix locale conversion
Ensure key values are converted in the user's locale. This impacted people who used a comma as a decimal separator.
Allow custom variables to be formatted
Allows variables generated by external scripts to be formatted in the overlay editor
Fix normalise on/off function
Ensure that various boolean and textual values evaluate to "on" and "off" correctly. For example, "1", "on", "true", and "yes" now evaluate to "on".
Enhance mask loader to check for files
Before loading a mask for use ensure that it exists, if it doesn't an error is generated
Charts¶
Edit doesn't edit the chart
The chart edit button was failing to load the chart correctly.
Cleanup Pi web server error logs
Due to a timing issue in the way charts are loaded, errors were being generated in the Pi web server error log
Install and upgrade¶
Define size for Allsky temporary files folder, Ignore for NVMe devices
Improve the way "~/allsky/tmp" is created in memory. For NVMe devices do not create in memory
Implement Days To Keep for remote Websites
Add the number of "Days To Keep on Remote Website" setting to determine how many image and video files to keep on the remote Website
Bookworm: install matplotlib into the venv
Ensure the correct version of matplotlib is installed.
Copy support logs
During installation, copy any support logs from allsky-OLD to allsky
Better documentation links
After installation or upgrade point the user at the Allsky documentation
WebUI¶
display keolapses in WebUI and Allsky Websites
Add displaying keolapses in the Allsky WebUI and Allsky Website, either local or remote
"generateForDay.sh: --keolapse" creates or uploads the Allsky Keolapse/Timelapse module's keolapse
generateForDay.sh can now create or upload a keolapse, like keograms, startrails, and timelapses..
generateForDay.sh: automatically create or upload keolapse
When: a plain "generateForDay.sh DATE," or "--upload DATE" is run, it now also creates or uploads the keolapse. Condition: the Allsky Keolapse/Timelapse module must be installed
Fix module manager on iPad and other touch devices
When clicking on the module gear icon on iPad the settings now open up
Fix to ensure Info Modal is displayed correctly
Going to the "Startrails Settings" helper tool, then clicking on the "Get Startrails Info" button at the bottom no longer leaves the window darkened
Restyle the settings page for different devices
Ensure that hte settings page is properly styles at various breakpoints across devices
Add link to release notes
When a new release is available display a link to the release notes in the WebUI notification
Display bad images list
Make the "Bad Images Info" helper tool's output more useful and user-friendly, especially when viewed via the WebUI. Change the "X consecutive bad images" message to point to the helper tool instead of just listing a file to manually look at.
Core scripts¶
Flow-runner: set day/night (TOD) in the periodic flow
For the periodic flow, flow-runner.py now works out day or night with Allsky's own rule: the Sun above the Angle setting is day. It uses astral, which is already a requirement.
Ensure the support info can be collected for a failed installation
Handle the case where Allsky wasn't installed when a user ran support.sh (which is the case if the installation didn't work).
Improve feedback on upload errors
Provide better feedback when there is an issue changing directory on a remote server
